A Sayre man wanted on felony charges lead Elk City police on a short pursuit recently.

Ultimately, 30-year-old Waiburn Cole Hinkle was arrested on the morning of January 28 on the west side of Elk City.

According to a probable cause affidavit, police reported that a vehicle known to authorities as a vehicle that was involved in a shoplifting incident at two Elk City businesses was spotted heading westbound on Country Club. When the officer attempted to initiate a traffic stop the passenger of the vehicle, later identified as being Hinkle, exited and began to run through a field – ignoring police commands to stop.

Eventually a perimeter was established by other police who had responded to the incident and Hinkle was located hiding in a tree line.

Hinkle was arrested and transported to the Elk City Jail.

Court records show Hinkle was wanted on felony domestic assault and battery by strangulation and kidnapping charges from last May.

Hinkle was charged last week with escapes or attempts to escape from arrest or detention for a felony.

A conference hearing for Hinkle has been scheduled for February 22.
