Elk City, OK – Elk City firefighters responded to a residential structure fire Thursday night around 8:00 p.m. in the 1400 block of Beth Court.
According to the Elk City Fire Department, crews arrived to find heavy smoke coming from the residence. Firefighters made entry to conduct a primary search to ensure no occupants were inside while at the same time launching an aggressive interior fire attack.
During the search, firefighters located and removed a dog from the home. Despite their efforts, the animal died from smoke inhalation.
Fire crews were able to bring the blaze under control within minutes, successfully confining damage to the kitchen and laundry area. The occupants were outside the home at the time of the fire, and no other injuries were reported.
Officials determined the fire originated in the kitchen and was consistent with a cooking-related incident.
The department expressed sympathy for the family as they cope with the loss of their pet and said they are working closely with them to provide assistance as needed.
Fire officials also used the incident as a reminder that cooking remains the leading cause of home fires. Residents are urged to stay in the kitchen while cooking and keep flammable items such as towels, paper products, and oven mitts away from the stovetop. If leaving the kitchen, burners should be turned off.
For small grease fires, officials advise using a lid to smother the flames and never using water. If a fire cannot be quickly and safely controlled, residents should evacuate immediately and call 911.
Firefighters credited the quick response and actions of crews for preventing further damage and are encouraging residents to review fire safety practices in their homes.
