Drought Conditions Improve – Rain Chances Could Be Going Away

June 9, 2023

By News Director Jared Atha

The recent rains have made a dent in the latest drought report.

According to the U.S. Drought Monitor’s latest report that came out Thursday, in a weeks time – the majority of western Oklahoma that was described as being in an extreme drought has been downgraded to a severe drought.

However, Portions of Roger Mills and Ellis Counties still remain in extreme drought conditions.

Central Oklahoma is described as being in a moderate drought and the eastern side of the state shows no drought conditions.

Last week’s late rain surge may be to credit for the improved conditions in the area.

According to the Oklahoma Mesonet, in a 7-day span local sites received impressive numbers – with most of the totals accumulating last Friday night.

In the past week, Elk City has received 2.10 inches of rain, Clinton received 5.7 and Weatherford 2.6 inches.

The Butler / Foss Lake area received a whopping 5.9 inches of rain – the most of any Mesonet site in the state last week.

The wet weather though, may be coming to an end.

According to meteorologists with the National Weather Service in Norman, after a 50% chance of rain overnight Friday, temperatures will consistently be in the upper 80s and lower 90s throughout next week, with the best chance of rain happening Monday night at just 30%.
