A Maryland man was arrested in Beckham County recently after a simple traffic stop led to the discovery of illegal drugs in the vehicle.

According to a probable cause affidavit, the traffic stop occurred on the night of December 8 when an Oklahoma Highway Patrolman pulled over 66-year-old Henry Fletcher Douglass of Brunswick, Maryland for speeding on Interstate 40 near mile marker 10. The affidavit stated that while the trooper was issuing the driver a warning, he noticed indicators from Douglass that alerted the trooper to possible illegal activity.

With the help from backup, the trooper’s K9 unit conducted a free air sniff of the vehicle where the dog would alert the authorities to the presence of a narcotic odor emitting from the vehicle. After searching the car, troopers would find large plastic sacks containing what later field tested positive to being marijuana. In all, troopers would find approximately 8.5 pounds of marijuana in the bags, along with a variety of different types of marijuana edibles and vape products in various packages.

When asked about the find, Douglass would deny knowledge of the drugs.

Douglass was placed under arrest and booked into the Beckham County Jail.

He was formally charged with possession of a controlled drug with the intent to distribute last week.

Bond for Douglass was set at $100,000.
