Washita County, OK – A recent multi-agency manhunt ended with one arrest and a drug discovery, thanks in part to quick collaboration and sharp canine instincts, according to Beckham County Sheriff Derek Manning.
The incident began with a vehicle pursuit that crossed county lines and turned into a foot chase when the suspect bailed out and ran into the countryside. Initial information linked the vehicle to a possibly armed and dangerous person from out of state. However, Sheriff Manning said it was later determined that the individual was a local resident with no outstanding warrants.
Washita County officials requested assistance from Beckham County, prompting the deployment of their K-9 unit and additional personnel. Multiple agencies joined the search, including Cordell Police, Custer County Sheriff’s Office, and the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.
“Agencies working together around here is a huge deal,” said Manning. “One agency usually doesn’t have enough people to securely create a perimeter and conduct a proper search. Cooperation is vital.”
Beckham County K-9 Deputy Kyle Oliver was part of the team. As they passed the suspect’s abandoned vehicle, the dog alerted—indicating the presence of drugs. Deputies secured the vehicle while the manhunt continued.
Following the trail, the K-9 unit led law enforcement to a creek bed covered in heavy brush, where they waited for daybreak. The suspect was found and taken into custody without incident.
A subsequent search of the vehicle confirmed the K-9’s alert. Deputies found illegal drugs and drug paraphernalia inside.
Sheriff Manning praised all the agencies involved. “It’s not just us going to help them—we get the same kind of support when we need it. I appreciate that they feel comfortable calling us, and I’m proud of my guys for jumping in without hesitation.”
No injuries were reported.
