One Dead in I-40 Crash Near Mile Marker 8; Eastbound Lanes Closed for More Than Five Hours

Beckham County, OK – Both eastbound lanes of Interstate 40 at mile marker 8 in Beckham County were closed for more than five hours Monday following a fatal collision, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred at 12:04 p.m. Troopers reported that both vehicles were traveling eastbound on I-40 when one vehicle struck a commercial motor vehicle from the rear. After the impact, the vehicle caught fire.

The driver of the commercial motor vehicle was not injured. Troopers reported he was wearing a seatbelt and there were no passengers in the vehicle.

The driver of Unit 2 has not yet been identified. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene and was reportedly from Tennessee. Authorities said the driver was not wearing a seatbelt.

No passengers were involved in either vehicle.

The eastbound lanes of I-40 at mile marker 8 were closed at 12:46 p.m. and reopened at 5:59 p.m., for a total closure time of 5 hours and 13 minutes.

The information released is preliminary and remains subject to change as the investigation continues.
