A traffic stop in Cordell led to the discovery of a sawed off shotgun in the possession of an ex-felon.

According to the probable cause affidavit, 48-year-old Jeffrey Dewayne Payne was pulled over by a Cordell police officer early in the morning on August 1 for speeding. Payne would tell the officer that he did not have a drivers license due to DUI’s he has had in the past. The report stated that Payne would allegedly tell the officer that he had consumed methamphetamine earlier in the evening.

When the officer placed Payne under arrest and searched him, he reported to have found two live rounds of shotgun shells in his pocket. When asked if there was a firearm in the vehicle, Payne allegedly told the officer that there was one under the passenger front seat. While doing so, Payne also confessed to having a meth pipe and pills in his pocket. When located, the officer noted that a white substance was on the pipe that would later field test positive to be methamphetamine. The officer would also find the pills that the defendant confessed as to not being prescribed to him.

Once the defendant was secured in the officers car, the officer searched the suspect’s vehicle and would find a sawed off, double barrel 20 gauge shotgun. The report stated that the shotgun was loaded with two live rounds.

Payne was booked into the Washita County Jail and was later charged with, among other things, possession of a sawed off shotgun, possession of a firearm after a former felony conviction and possession of a controlled dangerous substance.

A preliminary hearing conference for Payne has been scheduled in Washita County District Court for October 13.
